Sumi-e and Calligraphy Workshop September 2025

09/28/25 Sumi-e and Calligraphy Joint Workshop at Galleria Community Room

This was our first trial for offering a workshop with more variety and making it attractive to our members. There were 10 participants, and while a few focused on practicing calligraphy, the rest enjoyed experience in learning sumi-e technique.  

Sumi-e is another traditional Japanese art that uses sumi ink. However, it uses different brush techniques as it is considered painting. It may include color, though typically in soft and dull tones as grey is the basic color of sumi-e. It may be combined with calligraphy writing, so we thought it’d be a good idea to have both workshops together.

We hope to be able to continue this joint workshop next year so that one day, someone may improve and gain enough skills to create a beautiful artwork.

Participants also enjoyed a mini-market set up by a member who brought Japanese kitchen items and cooking and sumi-e books. We believe it was a very pleasant and successful event.

9月28日  ギャラリアコミュニティールームでの墨絵と習字ジョイントワークショップ

メンバーにもっとバラエティーで魅力のあるワークショップを提供しようという案で墨絵と習字を同時に行ってみました。10名の内数名が習字の練習に励んでいる中残りの参加者は墨絵のテクニックを習う経験を楽しみました。

墨絵は違う筆テクニックで墨汁を使う日本アートで絵画の類に入ると思います。色を使うこともありますが墨汁の灰色がベーシックなので全体的に柔らかい又は薄暗い感じのトーンになります。作品に書を加えることもある為、二つのワークショップを同時に行うのも良いアイデアだと思ったわけです。

来年も続けられればもしかすると将来誰かが腕を十分に磨いて立派な作品を仕上げることが出来るかもしれません。

メンバーの一人が日本食器・日本料理それから墨絵の本等をミニマーケットに提供頂いたので参加者はそちらの方も楽しんでいました。

なかなか楽しいイベントになって良かったと思います。
