Our Ikenobo class was held at the Galleria on October 26th and we were blessed with beautiful autumn weather.

The Ikenobo school has a history of over 500 years, with its headquarters in Kyoto, Japan. The "ike" means pond and "bo" means small hut. This site was established after a devastating war in Kyoto in the late 1400s. Early ruler Prince Shotoku found a temple near a pond with a small hut where he enshrined the Goddess of Mercy, creating a place of peace for the people.

Today, the school is led by the 46th Headmaster, Senko Ikenobo, who took over from her father, the 45th Headmaster, Senei Ikenobo (age 92). Her son, Senshu Ikenobo, will someday become the 47th Headmaster.

Our class started with people who were very enthusiastic and eager to arrange; I didn't need to talk too much. They say it is better to actually arrange than listen to a lot of lectures! Freestyle is one of the more modern ways of arranging, compared to the classic, traditional, and in-between styles.

Freestyle has both naturalistic and abstract type arrangements. It has no set form or rules like traditional styles. However, freestyle does not mean it is simply put together without thought or order. Like any other styles, it gives our creative minds a sense of organization. Most of all, we get enjoyment from encountering plants—which have the same life cycle as ours—and the feeling  of nature.

生花クラス

私達の池坊のクラスは秋晴れの良い天気にめぐまれ、10月26日ギャラリアの一室で行われました。池坊の学校は500年以上の歴史のある学校でその他の学校は池坊から枝分かれして広がりました。池坊の池はpond で、坊は小さな小屋のような建物と言う意味です。聖徳太子が見つけ観音様を祭っているお寺の近くの池(聖徳太子が行水した)と小屋から池坊の名前由来になり、このお寺の地域が池坊の学校の発祥地で人々の安らぎの場となりました。

現代池坊専永45世92歳で娘さんの池坊専好46世に引き継がれ、彼のお孫さんの47世となる池坊専宗がいずれ何時かは継続していくようになるでしょう。

私達のワークショップはとても熱心な方ばかりで、アレンジするのが待ちきれなくて早々に始まり私の仕事は楽でした。百聞は一見にしかずというように、何度もレクチャーを聞くより実際にアレンジする方が為にになり身につくかも知れません。

池坊には古典、伝統的、現代版と色々とスタイルがありますが、私達は自由花をやりました。自由花には自然体とデザイン型があり好きな方を選べ、どこにアレンジを飾るのかを考え、他のアレンジのような規則や決まった型等はないのです。しかし何でも挿せば良いのではなく、自分の想像力とまとめる力を使って見る人の目を楽しませ、自分も植物達と一緒に自然界に浸り穏やかな一時を過ごせたら上手、下手は関係なくアレンジは成功となると思います。

参加者7名の皆様、色々と勉強させて頂き、そしてお手伝いありがとうございました。健康的な冬をお過ごし下さい。
