Ikebana Workshop May 2026

It rained that day, but it wasn't a downpour; it was a nice, cool rain that the plants appreciated. There were six of us in total (two couldn't make it), and we had a wonderful time. Everyone was very enthusiastic and seemed unable to wait to arrange their flowers. Each person brought 2-5 containers and seemed to be enjoying themselves while arranging their flowers.
This lesson was focused on "Free Style." Free Style is one of the many forms within the Ikenobo school; it is a highly popular style devised by the current Headmaster, Sen'ei Ikenobo, in response to changes in Japanese lifestyles and the environment. It can take both natural or unnatural forms. There are no fixed rules for freestyle; it depends on the combination of materials and where it will be displayed. The most important thing is to become one with the plants and enjoy the process of arranging them.

当日は雨になりましたが、大雨というわけではなく、植物達にとっては優しくて涼しい良い雨でした。全部で6名の参加者(2名は来れなくなり、残念でした)それぞれが、2個から５個のコンティナーを持参され、とても熱心に楽しく活けておられました。
本日のレッスンは、フリースタイル。フリースタイルは、数ある池坊流スタイルの中のー種で、日本の生活や環境の変化に伴って、現在のヘッドマスター専永池坊が考案された、とてもポピュラーなものです。フリースタイルには、自然的、非自然的な形など、色々な活け方がありますが、特に決まった規則というものはありません。材料の組み合わせやどこに飾るのかによっても、花の入れ方が違ってきます。要は植物達と一体となり楽しく活けて下されば良いと思います。私もご一緒に、とても楽しい時を過ごす事ができました。参加者の皆様、どうも有難うございました。
