Dassai Sake Brewery Tanabata Star Festival
12 PM to 4 PM at Dassai Sake Brewery in Hyde Park
A group of MHJCA volunteers came together at Dassai sake brewery for two days in July to celebrate Tanabata (star festival). The days were beautiful and sunny, with Japanese food vendors and many families in attendance. There were tanzaku available at the entrance, and bamboo branches to hang them. Our members mostly wore yukata or hanten, and enjoyed introducing origami to visitors.
There were many children and their parents who wanted to make origami shuriken, frogs, cranes, and boxes. We also made tiny puffed stars with strips of paper, and paper lanterns of various sizes. Some members practiced making otters for the first kanji in Dassai (獺), which was very challenging!
Dassai provided a light lunch of sushi to the volunteers, and we also enjoyed delicious food that members brought from home.
Parents helped their small children make origami, but some older kids were very diligent and worked on their project while parents took the Dassai tour. We hope to continue partnering with Dassai to celebrate Japanese culture as we head into the second half of the year!

「獺祭（だっさい）」酒蔵 七夕祭り
ハイド・パークにある獺祭の酒蔵にて、正午から午後4時まで開催
7月の2日間、MHJCA（ヒューストン・ジャパン・コミュニティ・アソシエーション）のボランティア・グループが獺祭の酒蔵に集まり、七夕祭りを祝いました。当日は素晴らしい晴天に恵まれ、日本食の屋台が出店する中、多くの家族連れで賑わいました。会場の入り口には「短冊」と、それを飾るための笹の枝が用意されていました。メンバーの多くは浴衣や半纏（はんてん）を身にまとい、来場者に折り紙を紹介して楽しみました。
手裏剣、カエル、鶴、箱などの折り紙を作りたいという子供たちやその親御さんが大勢訪れました。また、細長い紙を使って小さな「星（ラッキースター）」や、大小さまざまな紙提灯も作りました。中には、「獺祭」の「獺（カワウソ）」の字にちなんでカワウソの折り紙作りに挑戦するメンバーもいましたが、これはなかなか難しい作業でした！
獺祭からはボランティアに軽食としてお寿司が提供されたほか、メンバーが自宅から持ち寄った美味しい料理も楽しみました。
小さな子供たちが折り紙を作る際には親御さんが手伝っていましたが、少し大きな子供たちの中には、親御さんが獺祭の酒蔵見学ツアーに参加している間、熱心に折り紙作りに取り組む姿も見られました。下半期に向けても、引き続き獺祭と協力しながら日本文化を祝う活動を続けていきたいと考えています！
