Origami and Calligraphy program at the Dassai Blue Tanabata Festival

We were extremely delighted when we received an invitation from Dassai Blue Sake Brewery to join them as cultural vendor at their Tanabata festival. Free and open to the public, the festival was held on July 4th weekend. Dassai Blue has been our neighbor in the mid-Hudson region since the fall of 2023 and we wanted to formally introduce ourselves to them. We also saw this as an opportunity to share our origami and calligraphy programs and build MHJCA’s recognition within the community, especially since our events have not quite returned to their pre-pandemic level.

At first, we weren’t sure if there would be enough kids to entertain since the venue is a sake brewery, but the weekend turned out to extremely successful as many parents happily enjoyed their food and drinks while watching their kids concentrate on folding origami. The calligraphy table was more popular with adults as many had some kind of connection to Japanese culture or people, and they all shared happy memories and stories with us. Some attendees were visiting NY from other states or countries and they stopped by our table to write Japanese calligraphy. Now they have added more new memories.

So that is the main reason why we do what we do—to create a bridge between people of all different races and nationalities and ages. It’s a wonderful feeling when we see our programs become that bridge.

We sincerely thank Dassai Blue for their invitation and recognition of our program. And as always, thanks to our volunteers’ dedication and efforts to help our organization continue its mission. Lastly, I want all members to know that, in spite of the last-minute request, Anton-san, our IT manager, and Yoko-san, the Office Manager, did a great job in getting us new brochures in time! We are very proud of you all. Thank you!!!

2023年秋にオープンした獺祭BlueからJuly 4thの週末に一般向けに無料で行われる七夕祭にカルチャープログラムのベンダーとして参加するお誘いを受けました。

私達のメインの活動地域であるハドソン地区の同じコミュニティになった獺祭Blueに正式に会の紹介と共に、最近パブリックライブラリーとか学校でのイベントがパンデミック以来少なくなったので地域の方々に改めて会の存在を宣伝する意味も兼ねて折り紙と習字プログラムを喜んで引き受けました。

ただし会場は醸造所なので最初は子供が少ないかもしれないと予測しましたが、一生懸命折り紙作りに専念している子供さんを見ながら食事をすることが出来たこともあり結構多くの家族にエンジョイして頂いて大変人気でした。一方習字テーブルの方は日本文化又は日本人との楽しい思い出と経験話のある大人の参加者が多く、中には他の州だけでなく海外からNYにバケーションで来た人達が筆で習字を書くのを楽しんで頂いて、皆さんそれぞれの人生にまた新たな思い出を加えることが出来たと思います。

私達のプログラムが人種・民族・年齢に関係なく沢山の人々の間を繋ぐ橋となることが会の一番の目的でもあるので、改めてそれを認識出来たことを大変嬉しく思います。

今回ご招待を頂いたことと私共の会の存在を認識頂いた獺祭Blue社に心から感謝致します。又、会のプログラムを支える為にいつも様々な形で努力を提供頂けるボランティアメンバーの方々有難うございました。最後に、今回ギリギリになってお願いしたにも拘らずITマネージャーのアントンさんとオフィスマネージャーのよう子さんに会の新ブローシャー発行を間に合わせて頂いたことをメンバーの方々にご報告しておきます。
