Mahjong

We held our first Mahjong gathering on Sunday, October 4, in the community room.

However, the alarm system was triggered that day; two fire trucks were dispatched, and the room was cordoned off. We had to wait in the food court and hallways while safety checks were conducted, and it wasn't until around 1:40 PM that we could actually use the room.

Six people participated, including two advanced players, while the others were mostly beginners. We also welcomed Alan, a university student who had just become a member. Mr. Onuma took charge of instructing us. Since Mahjong is a four-player game, we took turns rotating in and out while learning the rules and the specific calls like "pon" and "chi."

It’s the kind of game that gets you hooked once you start playing; we’re already thinking about when to hold the next session. Since we started late, we extended the finish time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

It seems that Mahjong is currently trending in the United States. Although the rules may differ slightly, I believe it is an excellent mental workout. In particular, for seniors, it offers opportunities for conversation and, I feel, may help prevent dementia. With that said, we look forward to the next session.
